Using Your Mentor to Expand Your Network
Using Your Mentor to Expand Your Network
One of the valuable aspects of having a mentor is the expansion of your professional network. Mentors can make introductions for you to others who can be helpful. They can also open doors for you that may not otherwise be accessible. Here’s how you can make sure to use this valuable mentor resource.
-
Ask your mentor to give you names of people who can be helpful to you. The list should also contain information on the person, especially how they can be helpful.
-
Set a goal of making at least one new connection each week. You can do this by introducing yourself in the following way: “My name is _____. [Your Mentor’s Name] suggested that I reach out to you to introduce myself and to get to know you. I hope we can get to know each other soon in person or by phone. Would you be open to a conversation at a date that is convenient to you?”
-
Ask your mentor about organizations you should join or events you should attend. Many times your mentor may be willing to be your host for those.
-
Ask your mentor for LinkedIn connections you should make. Request a LinkedIn connection by using your mentor’s name as a referral.
These mentor connections will occur naturally, but it’s better if you have a plan for how to expand your network through your mentor.
