Setting Goals
Setting Goals
Most of us have had the experience of setting goals, only to abandon these goals after a short period of time. A mentor can help you maintain your focus on your goals.
Here are some things you can do to use your mentor in goal setting:
- Tell your mentor what your goal is. You will also want your mentor to let you know if the goal is realistic and appropriate.
- Discuss with your mentor the challenges you have in achieving your goal. Ask for advice in how to overcome these challenges.
- When you face a moment of truth in meeting your goal. Ask your advisor how to stay on track.
- Work with your advisor to identify a way to measure your goal achievement. This should also include a way to track the goal weekly.
Most successful leaders will say that the ability to set and achieve goals is critical to their success. They will also tell you that they needed help earlier in their career to develop goal discipline. That help comes from a mentor.
