Teaching Essential Skills
Teaching Essential Skills
Mentors have learned over time how to get things done. Advisees will rarely have this knowledge, and mentors can be very helpful in showing their advisees what they have learned.
Here are some guidelines for teaching your advisee.
- As you meet with your advisee, begin to think what your advisee needs to know. You may observe these as weaknesses.
- Work through a live situation with your advisee where you can teach/guide as the situation unfolds.
- Once the situation has concluded, guide your advisee through a lessons learned session. This is a way to help your advisee see what further improvements are needed.
When you are teaching your advisee, you will probably find that you are also learning more than you ever realized about what you know.
