Keeping Your Scholarships
Scholarships that are renewable typically have requirements for maintaining the scholarship. Generally these requirements reflect both a GPA requirement and credit hours completed requirement. In most cases, you have the entire academic year to meet the requirements. This includes the summer.
Exhibit 1 contains an example of a student who needs to improve his/her academic record to renew a scholarship. For this example, suppose that you need a 3.00 GPA and 30 completed hours to renew your scholarship. Suppose in this case that your college has a policy that lets students repeat a class with an F grade with the second grade replacing the first grade.
- Step 1 shows the GPA calculation for the fall semester. See the Topic: Calculating Your GPA for information on this calculation.
- Step 2 shows how to revise your fall GPA to take into account the repeat of your math class. Credit hours are dropped by 3 hours. Quality points are not reduced since you earned no quality points for the F in math.
- Step 3 shows how to determine the GPA and credit hours you need in the spring semester. Once you know these, you can determine the GPA you need.
This basic approach can be used in subsequent semesters to determine your GPA and credit hour requirements.
