Dealing With the Issue of a High School Relationship

by JoJo
August 16, 2012

One of the most challenging issues that high school students face in thinking about college is how to continue a relationship from high school.  In some cases, one of you will be still in high school while the other half is in college.  In other cases, you may decide to go to different colleges.  Obviously the relationship is going to be challenged.  In fact it will be challenged even when both of you go to the same college.

It’s tough to accept, but the fact is that very few high school relationships survive college.  The reasons can vary, but generally they include:

  1. The long distance just doesn’t work
  2. The relationship distracts from classes
  3. There are too many other possibilities on campus to limit yourself to one person
  4. Interests change and the relationship doesn’t change with them

Unfortunately a break up while in college can be very damaging to your grades.  You can’t focus on your classes for weeks.  The next thing you know, you are in academic trouble.

You will be better off if you can end the relationship before you go to college.  This sounds harsh, but you need to deal with the reality that few relationships ever last.  So it’s best to end them when the consequences are less serious.   One final comment from an unnamed source: “Why would you take sand to a beach?”.

Testimonials

  • My biggest improvement is that I have been checking my grades, instead of burying my head and trying to ignore the classes I know I am doing bad in.  This semester my grades don't necessarily show improvement at midterms because once again I wasn't prepared for the first round of exams.  That really came back to bite me because in a few classes that was the only grade on the midterms.  But since I have been keeping track, I have been doing everything in my power to make the grades better.  I did all my on-line homework for a few classes so that I would not have to worry about keeping track of when they are due, and I have been keeping a to-do list for studying and things like that..
