Dealing With the Issue of a High School Relationship

by JoJo
August 16, 2012

One of the most challenging issues that high school students face in thinking about college is how to continue a relationship from high school.  In some cases, one of you will be still in high school while the other half is in college.  In other cases, you may decide to go to different colleges.  Obviously the relationship is going to be challenged.  In fact it will be challenged even when both of you go to the same college.

It’s tough to accept, but the fact is that very few high school relationships survive college.  The reasons can vary, but generally they include:

  1. The long distance just doesn’t work
  2. The relationship distracts from classes
  3. There are too many other possibilities on campus to limit yourself to one person
  4. Interests change and the relationship doesn’t change with them

Unfortunately a break up while in college can be very damaging to your grades.  You can’t focus on your classes for weeks.  The next thing you know, you are in academic trouble.

You will be better off if you can end the relationship before you go to college.  This sounds harsh, but you need to deal with the reality that few relationships ever last.  So it’s best to end them when the consequences are less serious.   One final comment from an unnamed source: “Why would you take sand to a beach?”.

Testimonials

  • I have learned what a schedule should be and what to do when balancing work and school.  This semester I set up my schedule to be as productive as possible.  However, productive does not necessarily mean busier.  Last semester my schedule ran for about 13 hours a day most days.  I shot myself in the foot, and most often I felt too drained after work and school to get homework or studying done.  Now I undertand what I should expect of myself and how to create an effective schedule.  On top of that, there will be a balance between work and school the rest of my college career.  I have learned that the best way to handle homework and assignments is to get them done between classes or during spare time at work.  This prevents me from having to deal with the lack of motivation or energy when I get home and avoid the numerous distractions that are much more appealing after the day..
