Supporting the Advising/Counseling of Students

Advising/Counseling is an academic function that tends to be very different from one campus to another.  However these are done, the topics in the University Survival website might be supportive.

Consider the following advising/counseling roles.  With each role there are listed topics that might be helpful to students (and possibly their advisor/counselors).

  • Managing the Personal Side of the Transition to College

Generally these topics work best when the student is guided by an advisor in the selection of the best topic.  Once topics are selected for the student, the advisor and student can discuss the specific actions the student will take or the decision that needs to be made.

The topic content should be viewed as a starting point for the discussion.  Hopefully the content will help students work through the dimensions of the issue they are facing. .

Testimonials

  • The biggest improvement I have made this semester is waking up earlier. Previously, even if I had an early class I’d sleep until the last minute never questioning if I’d get to class on time. Well after being late to class several times or oversleeping and not even attending I realized that I should just wake up at the same time every day and get on a schedule. I now know that going to sleep at a reasonable hour each night is very important. Being on a steady sleep schedule makes my life a whole lot easier because now when I’m in class I am well rested and I pay attention and actually understand what my teachers are teaching me..
